Building more efficient food systems, one plate at a time
Overproduction is an unsurprisingly large part of food waste. You might be surprised how easily we can impact it...

234 Million Tons
That’s how much red meat we produce globally every year — a lot more than we actually eat!
Hey, it’s Albi!
We hope you all had a great J-term and are settling back into campus life nicely!
We’re back to sharing interesting tidbits about food waste in our weekly newsletter.
Did you know that globally, we overproduce certain food groups by as much as 4.6 times? That means for every side of fries you order at the drive-thru, we’re growing, harvesting, prepping, and cooking 4.6 servings!

The good news here is that overproduction doesn’t just happen on the farm – it’s a product of the entire food system – which means that we, as individuals, can actually have an impact, by simply wasting less ourselves.

By making conscious decisions about how much food we take, we help break the cycle of overproduction. Less waste means kitchens need fewer supplies, which means less food needs to be produced, and less ends up being wasted.
It almost sounds too easy to be true, but taking less on your first go around commons and coming back for seconds reduces waste and ultimately leads to less impact on our planet caused by overproduction!
Let’s make eating smart the norm. Together, we can help reduce food waste, support more efficient food systems, and create a healthier planet for all.
Best,
The Albi Team
