Move over Musk...
Did you know that in the US alone, the annual cost of food waste is estimated at...
$220 Billion
Leaving America’s annual food waste the equivalent of #2 on the list of the world’s richest people!
Hey, it’s Albi!
What a gross amount of money, huh?! 🤯
Since we’re not in the classroom this week, we thought it would be fun to look at some of the bigger numbers around national waste. However, we realized that although it’s pretty shocking that 21% of the US water supply is used on wasted food each year (according to Forbes), these numbers really are just too big to comprehend.
So we decided to look a little closer to home…

It’s wild that one of the tallest man-made structures in Upstate New York is a landfill site… eurgh🤦🏻♂️
We’re on a mission to make food waste make sense by breaking it down for students across the country.
As we continue analyzing waste in Commons, we’ll be updating our Hartwick website weekly to show how food waste is trending.
If you don’t want to bug your friends to sign up for an email newsletter — totally get it — at least you can wow them with your new catalog of random food waste facts (don’t worry, we promise not to make you cite us in your text).
Just remember, the more people that know about this, the more impact we can have together!
Keep studying hard, and as always, eat smart…
Best,
The Albi Team
