Thanksgiving exposed!

Turkey Day comes with quite the environmental price tag — some of these numbers are insane!

Hey!

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we decided to take a look at some of the numbers behind the food industry’s big day!

It makes sense that food waste would be high on a day pretty much built around food. But we think you might be surprised to see just how crazy some of these numbers are…

According to ReFed, Thanksgiving day food waste in 2023 was expected to be a staggering 312 MILLION lbs.

Ahh, big number!

What might that look like, you ask?

Oh, you know, only 750 Boeing 747s stacked on top of each other!

Shoutout to GenAI for being able to keep up with this weird image creation request…

And, somehow, that’s not even the craziest part…

All that wasted food is responsible for the equivalent amount of emissions as driving a car all the way around the world 73,000 times!

Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to spread the word about the impacts of food waste

Don’t take for granted all that you know about food waste and its impact on the planet — you’d be surprised how many people don’t know about this stuff!

Eating smart is just the first step in helping to reduce global waste. Spread the word and help more people to start eating smart today.

Keep an eye out for this week’s posters in Commons to see the impact on Thanksgiving waste if everyone reduced their waste as much as we have at Hartwick this semester!

All the best,

The Albi Team
